2010
Sandra wins the Cup
For the second year in a row, the Bega Showjumping Cup main event has been won by a Bega Showjumping Club member. This time it was the club's vice president, Sandra Kenny who is only the second woman in the event's 15 year history to do so. Once again, the three day event was hugely successful with perfect footing and thrilling entertainment. For the first time in 2010, there was not one drop of rain for the duration of the event, just as promised by show organisers!
The main class, the Grand Hotel Bega Showjumping Cup was held at 6pm on Thursday night and attracted a grand-stand full of spectators. Seventeen competitors started in the event with the in form Ally Lamb and the big-class veteran Grant Hughes tipped as favourites to take out the class. At the completion of the first round, only three combinations were clear; Sandra Kenny and Alando, Grant Hughes and Yakkity Yak and another local, Brett Clarke and GH Tigerlilly. The interesting course, including a quadruple combination, was set by course designer Gavin Chester who generously agreed to course design 24 hours before the show when the original course designer Graeme Watts was flooded in at his home in Queensland. Sandra was last to go and with Grant and Brett both incurring 4 penalties in the second round, all she had to do was leave all the fences up to win. And that she did much to the delight of the home crowd and her proud father Terry. Her horse Alando only standing about 15.2 hh in height was all heart and tried so hard to not disappoint. A 10-year-old race-horse reject by King Tristram, he has certainly shown that anything is possible.
A full report and results will be published at a later date. To view all of the photos, visit the PHOTO GALLERY and look under BEGA SHOWJUMPING CUP 2011. Don't forget to check out the fantastic coverage on the Horse Deals Magazine website.
