Far South Coast Showjumper of the Year Presentation Dinner 2011
The presentation dinner for the Far South Coast Showjumper of the Year Series was held on the 26th March 2011 at the Asian Pearl Chinese Restaurant, the Grand Hotel Bega. For the second year in a row, the father and son team of Brett and Lane Clarke won the two awards, Lane the Graham Johnson Memorial Junior Award and Brett the Keith Gordon Memorial Senior Award. These are awarded to the horse and rider combination with the highest pointscore after the completion of seven local shows, including the Bega Showjumping Cup. Runner-up awards went to Samara George (Junior) and Troy Johnson (Senior). All competitors, ring committee members, showjumping volunteers, sponsors and jump club members were invited to come along to enjoy a buffet chinese meal and a great night out with friends. And a great night was had by all with several highlights throughout the evening.
It was fantastic to have a guest of honour, Grant Hughes and his family, who came down for the weekend and made some presentations. Grant spoke of his closeness and connection with the Bega Club and local shows as he is originally from Moruya and he now resides in Canberra which is really only a stones-throw away. He spoke of how whenever he goes away doing shows, he is quite often asked "How are things back home in Bega?" and he takes great pride in answering in the affirmative and not actually acknowledging the fact that isn't from Bega. He does however regard Bega as one of his "homes" and we at Bega Showjumping Club like to adopt him as one of our own. It was particularly obvious while presenting the Bega Showjumping Club's very first Life Memberships that Grant has a deep connection with Bega as he could quite easily rattle off the importance and achievements of each of the recipients. The Club's very first recipients of Life Membership were Richard Otton "Our very own walking, talking history book", Brian Mallyon "The voice, heart and soul of our region", Marie Smith "You can't beat the love and support from our Nanny" and Helen Slater "An eternal generosity and pride that can't be denied".
Another highlight of the evening was the "Part 2" reading from Madge Salway. Last year Madge put together some words about the history of jumping in the Bega Valley when she was a competitor, a reading covering the 50's to the 80's. This year Madge chose to speak about her experiences at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and the old showground. It is so important to hear these memories and through Madge's readings you can get a real feel for what it would have been like. Madge spoke of how her father took her and her two sisters to the show when they were quite young for their riding classes. They could not compete in the jumping until they were 12. When they did start jumping they were highly competitive winning many events between them. Madge's career best performance was winning the six-bar event. Back in those days you kept jumping until their was a winner with jumps gradually being taken away from the line. When Madge cleaned that final round of only two fences over 6' high, the huge crowd gave her a standing ovation and she was asked for autographs and if her 'gorgeous' horse was for sale. Most of us can only imagine what that would feel like.
Also presented on the night were the Chester & Smith Encouragement awards from Stewart Smith. These were meant to be awarded at the Bemboka Show but following the huge deluge of rain they weren't presented. Also, as a bit of a joke, our new resident judge Greg Grant was given the present of a pair of braces to make sure we don't see the upper region of his back-side again! Finally, Stewart Smith was awarded a special trophy to acknowledge the fact that he and his wonderful old horse "World" won every six bar event that they contested this year. Stewart has not competed for quite some time following an accident that prevented him from riding for a few years. It is great to see him back in the saddle but some would argue that he is having way too much fun! The club would like to say a huge thank you to Jodie Grant who not only took on the mammoth task of collecting results from each show but also went to all of the trouble of videoing jump club members who competed at shows. Jodie put together a fantastic DVD that played in the background throughout the night. It took Jodie hours to go through all of her footage, pick, add & edit it all and then choose an appropriate song to play with each rider.

Fossil Cup Day
The 2011 Fossil’s Cup Showjumping competition and Cancer Council Fundraiser held on Sunday July 17 was a huge success. Now in its fifth year, the Annual Fossil’s Cup event attracts showjumping riders from near and far not only for the great competition but for the entertainment of the days major event, The Fossil’s Cup. This year the Fossil’s Cup featured riders who were champion competitors “back in their day” and haven’t been in the saddle for some time. The event also saw some “mature-age” beginners who have only just recently taken on the sport. It would be fair to say that Bermagui’s Craig Cowgill would be classed in the latter category but he wowed onlookers when he expertly rode the fastest time in the jump-off to take out the Fossil’s Cup for 2011. The Fossil’s Cup event this year was run over two rounds with all competitors invited back into the second round jump-off against the clock. The scores of the two rounds are added together with the combination with the lowest amount of penalties and the fastest time in the jump-off declared the winner. To add to the entertainment factor, the competitors were asked to complete three tasks in the first round. First they had to salute the judge, second they had to wave to the crowd between fences 6 and 7 and finally they had to gallop one lap of the arena at the completion of their round which really got the crowd involved. This years Fossils are to be congratulated on their great sportsmanship and their great display of riding. Six out the nine Fossils competed on borrowed horses. A huge thank you must go to Brett Clarke, the Otton family and Rob Stein for not only lending their horses to the cause but also offering instruction and advice before and during the event. It was great to witness a highly competitive and accident-free event this year!
This year’s event organiser Jodie Grant introduced the Cancer Council Fundraiser. The Bega Showjumping Club donated 10% of all entries received during the day on top of the collection made during the Fossil’s Cup event. Young Jump Club members Jess Clarke and Mikaela MacNamara did a great job charming spare change from the audience. The Bega Show Society Trust Committee donated the camping fees from the weekend to the fundraiser and some competitors donated their prize money back to the fundraiser. At the end of the day, the club raised a total of $370 to donate to the Cancer Council.
The Fossil’s Cup was not the only event of the day. Two rings judged by Greg Grant and Sue West operated seamlessly throughout the day thanks to the many volunteers who donated their time to ensure the smooth running of all events. The Bega Showjumping Club would like to take this opportunity to thank the many sponsors who donated money and prizes to this years Fossil’s Cup event. Please find below the results from the day. Congratulations Clint Beresford
On the 29th March Clint Beresford received an email informing him that he had been selected from many outstanding applicants to be on the NSW Institute of Sport's Emerging Talent Squad. Also selected on the squad was Jessica Brown, Danielle Butcher, Georgina Lucas and Hilary Scott. Clint will now receive assistance to go towards his dream of one day representing Australia. Clint, 18 has just recently moved to Canberra to work for Grant Hughes and received the news from his mother Jenny over the phone. After hearing the great news Clint replied "It's about time someone from down here got up amongst the city folk." Clint has been such a great ambassador for Bega Showjumping Club and we are so proud of him. He shows maturity well beyond his years both in the way he rides and how he conducts himself within the sport. Please find below Clint's impressive application;
For the past few years I have been going to Forest Park Equestrian School in the school holidays and working and gaining experience in all aspects of the equestrian field under the guidance of Grant Hughes.
In December 2009 I competed in the Bega Showjumping Cup Grand Prix and was placed 9th overall. I was the youngest competitor ever, to compete in this 1.40-1.50m event, since it was established 15 years ago. Between December 2009 and May 2010 I competed in a few ODE events with pleasing results. I found this a new and exciting challenge. In May 2010 I was one of five riders who where nominated to represent Australia at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. I was delighted to be chosen as the 2nd Reserve. Between May and September I took time off for my HSC Study commitments. I successfully completed my HSC in October 2010. In November I competed in the Wodonga, Sale and Tonimbuk World Cup Shows. At Sale I had my first World Cup Qualifier start outdoors with a total of 12 faults. My second World Cup Qualifier start was at the indoor Tonimbuk venue with a total of 16 faults.December 2010 saw me place a respectful 4th place in the main event of the Bega Showjumping Cup Grand Prix. I have also competed in a few bareback challenges over 1.60m fences at Canberra Show and the SIEC WC Weekend. Since 2011 Canberra Royal Show I have been working along side Grant Hughes at his Equestrian School. Grant has given me an amazing insight into the opportunities available.I will be taking 5 weeks off at the end of April to compete in a Queensland show run before returning to Forest Park. In August I will be traveling with Grant Hughes and competing in the World Cup Qualifier shows (Toowoomba, Brisbane, and Caboolture). My ambition is to compete in these World Cup qualifiers. I have been shoeing my 5 horses for the last few years. I hope to start my farrier trade in June/July this year. I would like to see my future in the Equestrian industry as it is a very rewarding and self satisfying sport. I enjoy all aspects of the horse business from the most challenging to the most rewarding. I would like to represent Australia one day and bring home a medal, preferably Gold.

Jump Club 18th June 2011
Bega Jump Club hosted another well attended day at the Bega Showground on the weekend. Numbers weren't huge but this allowed participants to have an extra round if they wished. At the club's next Jump Club day, we are going to trial a "Cross-Rail Hour" where participants can enter once but go around as many times as they wish within the hour, starting at 9:30am and ending at 10:30am. This will hopefully benefit and less experienced horses and/or riders who are needing to gain some more confidence and experience in the ring. Thank you to everyone who helped out on the day, it was great to see everyone offering help in one way or another, it is after all YOUR club. Results and current pointscore leaders are below:

Jump Club 3rd July 2011
Finally, Jump Club was blessed with a gorgeous winters day on the 3rd of July. With one ring in operation, the day began at 9:30am with a "Cross Rail Hour", or "hour of power" as I once heard it being referred to! This is a new initiative for the club proving to be very popular with participants. This day was also the first day of the new membership year and saw a lot of renewals. With the Fossil's Cup just around the corner, we witnessed a few "fossil's" getting a head start on their competition by participating on this day. Jump Club 31st July 2011
After getting off to a slow start and thinking that it was going to be a quiet day, Jump Club on the 31st July turned out quite a large role up. It would seem that the competition horses are coming back into work as quite a few were seen at this, their first Jump Club of the year. Cross-rail hour is still going strong with many appreciating the time to take things steadier. The contest for the Charlie Smith Memorial Highest Pointscore Award is certainly hotting up, particularly in the Senior Division with the lead changing from day to day. In the Juniors, first time member Riley Whyman has been building on his lead from the very first day and is improving with every outing.

Jump Club at Cobargo
The 2011 Bega Showjumping Club season kicked off at Cobargo this year. Many thanks to the Cobargo Show Society for letting the club use its facilities. Both days were well attended and many new members joined which is fantastic. The days were fun and relaxed which enabled all riders to have plenty of rounds if they wished. A big thank you to Jodie Grant for organising the days at Cobargo and starting Jump Club for the year. Thanks to Caroline Otton for catering at the days. The sausage in a bun was a huge hit! Thanks to everyone who volunteered throughout the day, this is such a huge part of being a Jump Club member, we need to all help each other to ensure we all have a great day.
The photos above were taken by Nola Hassan. Thanks Nola for sending them to me. On the left we have part of the work crew, Poss Otton is supervising, Sarah Dreverman pencilling, Jodie Grant on the video, apprentice judge Jess Clarke and resident judge Greg Grant. On the right we have new member Kaylee Chapple-Stroud riding the fantastic old campaigner 'Bob'.
Greg Grant has volunteered this year to take on the role of collecting results from Jump Club days and compiling the "Charlie Smith Memorial Highest Pointscore". The first day was just a warm-up but here are the current results from the second day, round 1 of the Pointscore.

"The Bega Experience" - The Bega Cup featured in Equestrian Life Magazine
_Bega on the map
Story by Josh Bartlett - Bega District News
THE Bega Showjumping Cup has been recognised on a national scale. At the Far South Coast Showjumper of the Year presentation on Saturday night, master of ceremonies Kirsty McPaul read exerts from an article in Australian magazine, Equestrian Life. In the February/March edition, “The Bega Experience” by Annie Lever discusses the history of the Cup and features quotes from showjumping icon Vicki Roycroft. The story begins with “There must be something in the water at Bega, or maybe it’s the milk, as the NSW South Coast town that gives it name to one of Australia’s favourite cheese producers seems to have spawned more than its fair share of talented horsemen”. The list of locals who have made it onto the national stage include world champion four-in-hand driver Boyd Exell, well-known show horse producer Dale Plumb, Sydney Olympian and former national showjumping coach Jamie Coman, Deon Williams and Jeff Otton.
The Bega Showjumping Cup was established in 1995. Lever wrote “The very first Bega Cup was one of those memorable classes when good rider after good rider went faster and faster in the jump-off against the clock. Much to the delight of a very excited crowd, George Sanna and Will made a beautiful gallop to the last to take the substantial first prize.” Bega Showjumping Club president Jeff “Poss” Otton said the first cup would be a hard act to follow.
A driving force behind the cup in the early years was the above-average prize money. Helen Slater and her husband, the late Malcolm, were on board early sponsoring the Ampol Caltex Bega Grand Prix. “Right from the beginning, the show had a wonderful atmosphere that it maintains to this day,” Lever wrote. “Friendly, relaxed – maybe it is the time of the year, but Bega reminds many of the welcoming, social shows of years gone by.”
From 1999 to 2005, Bega hosted a round of the Pacific League World Cup, with the first class won by Ronnie Easey. Easey went on to be part of the Australian team at the Sydney Olympics. The World Cup qualifier was abandoned after a couple of very hot shows and the desire for some professional riders to give themselves and their horses a break in January-February. Lever wrote that in 2011, “Bega offers the campfire experience with beautiful footing and well-designed courses”, crediting the efforts of international course designer Gavin Chester.
Bega also hosted another special guest at that show, Vicki Roycroft. In the article, Roycroft described Bega as “one of the nicest shows on the circuit and climate wise, it was perfect this year. They have a dedicated, hard-working committee and the show runs like a well-oiled machine at the picturesque Bega Showgrounds”.
On Saturday night, McPaul said it was great for Bega to feature in the prestigious magazine. “It’s a true testament to our showjumping cup,” she said.
“I’m so happy because that is exactly the type of event we want to create here.”

Jamie Jumps for Joy!
_ REPORT - Bega Showjumping Cup 29th, 30th & 31st December 2011
Locally born and raised showjumping rider Jamie Grant was only nine years old when he came to the Bega Showground to watch the very first Bega Showjumping Cup. Fast forward 17 years and Jamie has been crowned the winner of the Grand Hotel sponsored Bega Showjumping Cup for 2011. Grant and his horse Cool K, who too took his some of his first competition steps on the Bega Showground some eight years ago, showed what many years of hard work and dedication can lead to when they posted the fastest double clear round of the prestigious Grand Prix event last Friday night. The win was well received by the mostly local crowd that included many relations of Jamie including his parents Sue & Denzil Grant, his fiancé Jess Scianamanica and her parents Attilio and Ann who could not hide the immense pride and happiness they felt for the win.
The course set by International Course Designer Gavin Chester was not a huge test of the horse’s scope but rather the rider’s ability to stay focused with many and varied related lines. The starting line-up of 19 boasted some of Australia’s best and most experienced riders such as triple Olympian Vicki Roycroft and Australian World Cup representative Aaron Williamson. It also had several young riders making their debut at this level including Sam Buchanan from Ardlethan NSW at only sixteen years of age. The event got off to a perfect start with David Lever and his impressive young horse Clover’s Luck posting a clear round. Lever was joined in the clear round ranks by seven other combinations; Tom Sutherland and Nolisco, Grant Hughes with Blackall Park Atlantis, Jamie Grant and Cool K, Paul Brent and Animate, Ally Lamb and Penrose, Brett Clarke and GH Tigerlilly, Dave Boulton and Special K. The decision was made to only allow horses with clear rounds into the second. With four horses by Daley K into the second round, this Bega event turned out to be a fitting and final tribute to the magnificent grey stallion who passed away the day after the event only 15 days before his 28th Birthday. Rest in peace Daley K.
David Lever and Clover’s Luck were first out in the second round and set a blistering pace galloping around the course and taking turns that made his fellow competitors sit up and take notice. Unfortunately two rails came down towards the end leaving Lever with a very fast time and a total of 8 faults. Next out was the very focused and determined young rider from Sydney, Tom Sutherland riding the experienced stallion Nolisco. Sutherland and Nolisco performed a faultless round and a very handy time to put the pressure on the rest of the field. Luckily for Canberra veteran Grant Hughes, he eats pressure for breakfast, and Hughes set out on Blackall Park Atlantis and notched up another fantastic clear round but was not fast enough to take the current lead from the Sydney youngster. Next into the arena was Jamie Grant and Cool K. Grant really put the pressure on this large grey gelding who does not have the best of steering gear and his gazelle like leap over the large fences left the crowd gasping as they watched Grant’s gambles pay off, one fence after another. Clean over the last fence and it is announced that Grant’s time was good enough to take the lead!
Next to contest the speed course is Paul Brent riding the most experienced horse in the field, Animate. Brent does not hold back and really has the stallion motoring, maybe a little too much when he just touches the first element of the combination to finish with 4 faults. Next is Ally Lamb riding the white mare Penrose. Penrose really is a photographers delight with her beautiful style making for great snap-shots. Her ability also matches her looks but unfortunately for Ally, one rail down has her down the placings. Bega Showjumping Club member Brett Clarke and his gutsy little brown mare GH Tigerlilly have all eyes back onto the arena as we all know how hard Clarke is to beat against the clock. Clarke gets off to a great start but the little mare is tiring and they finish the round with three rails on the ground. There is only one more combination to go and one more chance for Grant and Cool K to be knocked out of the lead. Dave Boulton and Special K canter into the first jump and clear it, the second fence is clear and then the third fence is down. The rider’s tent erupts into congratulations for Jamie Grant and his fiancé Jess as they all know that Grant will be declared the winner of this year’s event. At the presentation ceremony a slightly emotional Grant thanks his family and supporters with who he states he could not have done without and gives his fiancé Jess, who he will wed in March this year a very special and personal thank you. It is another very popular win and the third year in a row that a rider with Bega connections has won the Bega Showjumping Cup.
The final placings for the Grand Hotel Bega Showjumping Cup were: 1st Jamie Grant – Cool K, 2nd Tom Sutherland – Nolisco, 3rd Grant Hughes – Blackall Park Atlantis, 4th Paul Brent – Animate, 5th Ally Lamb – Penrose, 6th David Lever – Clovers Luck, 7th Brett Clarke – GH Tigerlilly, 8th David Boulton – Special K.
Following the main event, spectators were treated to two more events, the Junior Six Bar and the never-seen-before in Bega, PRO-AM Rescue Relay event. The rescue relay event was very well received by competitors and spectators alike. A “professional” or more experienced rider was teamed up with an “amateur” rider who was a less experienced rider or junior rider in the case of most teams. The teams took it in turns to negotiate the course with the first riders jumping the first three jumps, the second rider jumping the next three jumps and so on until the course was finished. Fast change-overs between the different legs were the key to success. The organising committee would like to say a special thank you to all of the professional riders who took the time to team up with the kids and make it a very memorable night for them!
The Bega Showjumping Cup event took place over three days. The event received almost 1500 entries which is about 500 more than previous years. This meant that the days were very long starting at 7am on some mornings and finishing after 9am on some nights. The Bega Showjumping Club’s hard working volunteers and committee members worked tirelessly throughout three days and were instrumental to the events success.
At the end of the competition, two awards were given out to the highest scoring horse and rider combinations. Lane Clarke and his horse GH Rambo won the Eagle Embroidery Highest Pointscore in Ring 2 award for the second year in a row. The Malcom Slater Memorial Award for the horse and rider with the highest pointscore in Ring 1 had to be split between two competitors this year. Dave Cameron had a wonderful show bringing with him 19 horses to Bega. Dave won the most events of any rider at the show and won the award on his beautiful brown gelding Copabella Gamelan with two firsts and a forth placing. Vicki Roycroft and her delightful old campaigner Eliza Jane snuck in to be equal first for the award when they won the final class of the show.
Overall the 2011 event was one of the most successful Bega Showjumping Cup events for over 10 years. This of course would not be possible without the valued support of our many sponsors. Thank you once again for your sponsorship.

Christmas Party & Presentation Night 26th November 2011
A fabulous night was had by all who attended the Bega Showjumping Club Christmas Party and Presentation Night on November 26. Many were dissapointed that the Open Competition Day also planned for the day had to be cancelled due to the rain that fell all night and morning. Come lunchtime however, the rain cleared into a warm and sunny evening, just perfect for celebrating the year with friends. While the club were enjoying the social occassion, life member Richard "Paddy" Otton was in not such a joyous mood as earlier that afternoon he had been bucked off his horse resulting in a badly fractured leg. Apparently it was some time before he was discovered by grandson Tom so hence, the Otton family were a little late making it to the party. The club would like to wish Grandad all the best for his recovery and wish goodluck to the nurses who have to look after him!
About 90 members and friends enjoyed a good chat and mingle over a beautifully prepared BBQ dinner. Thanks to Stu McPaul for operating the Barbeque. The presentations were once again well receieved with many good times recalled throughout the evening. At the end of the presentations, the Club farewelled the Stein family who are moving away after Christmas. President Poss Otton thanked Rob, Brittany and family for their commitment to the Club over the past few years and described Rob as being one of those members who you can really rely on to get a job done. Not only is Rob a great worker, he also provided much comic relief, his riding experiences, although not totally memorable for him, had onlookers in laughter on many occassions. As with all parties, the chats turned to stories which then turned into rather long yarns where the amount of truth became questionable. By the end of the night we discovered that Rob Stein had one other undiscovered talent. His story telling could match it with the best.
After the Presentations, the kids received a visit from Santa who came bearing lolly bags! Although it was getting late, the little ones were really excited to see the big fella in the red suit. Thanks must go to Jodie Grant who organised Santa and the lolly bags but I don't think the size or contents of the lolly bags were much appreciated by the parents! Jodie also put a lot of work into making DVD's and photo montages for all of our Fossil Cup competitors to take home as well as a Bloopers DVD that was shown on the big screen at the party.
All in all it was a great night and I look forward to seeing all of you at the Bega Showjumping Cup volunteering your help!

UPDATE - New Jumping Pathways
_
On
the 23rd August 2011, all of the members of the National Jumping Committee
attended a meeting to discuss the Jumping Pathways proposal and all of the
feedback that had been received to date either via email and letters or
captured in the online survey. At
the meeting the committee decided to rename the proposal the “National Jumping Structure'.
They also streamlined the power point presentation
which outlines the main points of the Jumping structure and
moved the implementation date of the proposed structure back by 12 months to 01
January 2013.
The committee wish to release the attached presentation as the new National Jumping Structure proposal which will be considered by each of the State Jumping committees over the next month. In early November the members of the National Committee will vote on the acceptance of this proposal.
A story will be placed on the National website tomorrow along with the Power Point presentation and other related documents. In the mean time.
Please see attached document.

Fossil Cup Day Another Huge Success!
Also, check out the photo gallery under 'JUMP CLUB DAYS' .

Members compete at Camden Amateur Championships
On the long weekend in June, five Bega Showjumping Club members traveled to Camden near Sydney to compete at the ESP Winter Showjumping Show for Amateur riders and Young Horses. Troy Johnson and Kirsty McPaul competed in the Amatuer Category A 1.20m classes. Sarah Dreverman and Patrick Jeffery competed in the Amateur Category B 1.10m classes and Alison Jeffery, who is not old enough for the Amateur division, took part in some open height classes.
The first two days consisted of the World FEI Challenge where competitors compete over 4 rounds. Identical courses are set up all over the world so that scores can be compared and Australians can be given a world ranking. Sarah and her beautiful paint horse "Emmaville Mosaic" got off to a great start by winning Rounds one and two of Category B on Saturday. Day 2 was not so kind though, with Sarah putting too much pressure onto herself and had a fall, resulting in elimination from the FEI competition. Patrick and his great horse "Fred" also performed creditably in Category B, placing 14th overall. Unfortunately for Troy, his creamy mare "Fifa La Viva" had an uncharacteristic rail in round one of the Category A competition as she was getting accustomed to the footing. This proved costly to his overall ranking as he jumped clear for the rest of the show. Troy and "Fifa" came second on the second day in Rounds 3 & 4 leaving him 8th overall for the FEI Category A competition. Kirsty and "Yesterday's Hero" tried hard but knocked one rail in each of the rounds to leave her mid-way in the rankings at 22nd, also in the Category A FEI competition.
Day three was Grand Prix day. With all of the restrictions of the FEI Challenge over and done with, it was time have a crack at the big one. The Category A Grand Prix was a a part of the "NSW Amateur Showjumper of the Year Series." Troy and Kirsty took part in this Grand Prix AM5 event. To add to this testing track was lovely rainfall and freezing temperatures. Troy and "Fifa" posted a clear first round and were delighted to sit around in the rain to wait for the jump-off. Kirsty's horse "Hero" decided that he liked the rain and also decided to jump clear in the first round, being the 8th and final of the clears to jump off. The jump-off was raised to a decent 1.30m track with several options. The first three competitors made a real mess of it by either getting eliminated or racking up a cricket score. Troy and "Fifa" was the first to post a clear round and a great time. Next out was Troy's main rival, ex Bega girl Emma Smith and her talented stallion "Ego Casablanca" who had beat him the previous day. "Casablanca" who is usually seen jumping much larger courses, made child's play of the jump-off and knocked 2 seconds off Troy to take the lead. Unfortunately for Kirsty, after taking all of the short options, she knocked the final hurdle. The Bega crew were very happy with Troy taking 2nd and Kirsty 4th. Unbeknown to Troy and Kirsty, this was actually the 8th round in this "NSW Amateur Showjumper of the Year Series." After only scoring once each, Troy is currently sitting 18th overall in the series and Kirsty 27th. Their are 15 rounds in this series ending at Sydney in December this year. Troy and Kirsty hope to get to more rounds of this series later in the year.

Cobargo Showjumping Cup - HUGE SUCCESS!
Brett Clarke & GH Tigerlilly
Clarke Claims Cobargo Cup
The Bega Showjumping Club played host to the very first Cobargo Showjumping Cup event on the weekend of October 29 & 30. The event was initiated and organised all within a small six week period when the Cobargo AP&H Show Society cancelled its Spring Horse Show which was supposed to have taken place that weekend. Organisers were apprehensive with such a small lead up time that the event might not attract as many competitors but they needn’t have worried. Over 170 horses and their riders came to Cobargo to contest the showjumping competitions in two rings and the overall outcome was that the show was deemed to be a great success.
Of course the event was not without its fair share of teething problems but the Cobargo Show Committee were more than helpful and ensured that the showground and facilities were in excellent order before the event. A small but cheerful band of Cobargo Show members also ran the canteen for the duration of the event which was greatly appreciated. It was a huge shame that two of the club’s hardest workers were unable to be a part of the event, Cobargo’s Jack Wilson and our announcer Brian Mallyon both laid up in bed and not where they really wanted to be. You were both sorely missed. The weather also tried its hardest to stop proceedings and it did actually win in the end with the final event being called off due to bad weather and dangerous footing. With rain pouring virtually the entire weekend in Bega, we were very lucky in Cobargo to get as much of the show over and done with as we did.
The major event, the Cobargo Showjumping Cup attracted a large field of 15 entries. Due to the fantastic foresight and prediction of bad weather by the Club’s President Jeffrey Otton, the Cup was moved forward in the day to beat the storm. The course was set by international course designer Warren Priestley from Nowra at approximately 1.30m high. Although the course was not overly testing, the footing and muddy surface on several of the turns proved to be a deciding factor in the final jump-off. At the completion of the first round, it was decided by Judge Greg Grant that riders with 4 faults or less would be invited back to contest the second round. This meant that 8 riders came back to contest the shortened and heightened track. Faults from the first round were added to faults incurred in the second round the time of the second round would decide the placings.
Sandra Kenny of Narooma was the first competitor out in the jump-off on her second-string horse Grandejuer and posted a great time and a clear round to finish on her first round score of 4 faults and really put pressure on the rest of the field. Next out was 2009 Bega Cup winners Jamie Smith and Mr. Whitter carrying with them 4 faults from the first round. Jamie pulled off a trademark fast round but unfortunately knocked one more rail to finish on a total of 8 faults. Vicki Brighton from Nowra and her horse Mr. Fugitive are very new to this level. They in fact jumped clear in the first round but incurred 3 time penalties for being a tad cautious. Vicki jumped a fantastic second round also knocking only one rail to give her a total of 7. Neville Cuzner from Bodalla was the first of the competitors carrying zero faults from the first round. Neville really had the foot down on his honest little mare SS Turbo Rose but paid the price in the heavy going with two rails on the ground and a total of 8. Next was the in form Brett Clarke and his brave mare GH Tigerlilly. This little mare does not like to touch a rail and urged on by Brett the combination posted the first double clear round of the event and a very fast time to beat. The pressure was on the final three competitors to jump clean or kiss the cup goodbye. Next out was ex-Bega boy now residing Canberra Jamie Grant and his World Cup mount Cool K. The pair made the first two jumps look like child’s play and then the wet and heavy ground claimed its first victim when Cool K’s feet slipped straight out from underneath him. Both horse and rider walked away fine but unfortunately incurring elimination from the competition. The second last competitor was Sandra Kenny again on her second horse Alando. This pair is the current reigning Bega Cup winner and was always going to be hard to beat. Sandra was out there to try her best and unfortunately a very tight turn from the first jump to the second via a mud-hole caused a little slip and the rail down at the second fence. Sandra and Alando completed the rest of the round safely and finished on a total of 4. Last to go was the speed-demon himself, Neville Cuzner on his second horse SS Turbo Mack. Everyone knew that if anyone could beat Brett Clarke’s time it would be this man. The pair’s unusual and sometimes frightening style had the crowd gasping with every jump. Turbo Mack tried his heart out, slipping, twisting and leaping around the course and was well up on Clarke’s time. With only one fence to go the Cup was in the bag but then down it came! Neville had used all of his luck knocking the last fence and incurring 4 faults. His time was faster than that of Clarke’s but no one else jumped a double clear round and the winner of the very first Cobargo Showjumping Cup was awarded to Brett Clarke and GH Tigerlilly.
Other major prize-winners from the weekend were also awarded trophy rugs and champion sashes. The Cobargo D Grade Champion was won by Sidney Roberts of Berry and her horse Versace Vision who had the highest pointscore after three D grade events. The winner of the Cobargo Champion Junior Rider was Lane Clarke from Bemboka and his horse GH Rambo who had the highest pointscore after two Junior events. Lane and Rambo also won the Cobargo Speed Champion. The winner of the Cobargo Champion Ring 2 competitor was Caitlyn Reid from Bermagui riding Ebony who had the highest pointscore over all events in Ring 2. Ring 2 enjoyed large entries in all events, all weekend and the courses were set by young local Tom Otton and the events were judged by Madge Salway and Marie Smith.
Overall the event was a huge success with all competitors very happy with the show and said that they would return for sure if it were to continue. The Bega Showjumping Club has hosted the Bega Showjumping Cup for 16 years and now has another fantastic Cup event to add to its repertoire thanks to the hard working committee and club members who made it all possible.
